What You Need to Know About Invisalign: Frequently Asked Questions
If you’re thinking about orthodontic work in order to straighten your smile, you’re probably curious about Invisalign and whether it’s a good option for you. We’ve put together a list of the most frequently asked questions about this treatment option to help answer your questions and decide if Invisalign is right for you.
What makes Invisalign different from traditional braces?
Traditional braces use metal brackets and wires that are affixed to your teeth using dental glue to shift your teeth into a new position. They are highly visible and can cause some discomfort, since the metal rubs against the inside of your mouth.
Invisalign uses a set of clear and removable “aligners” to gently move the position of your teeth. Your dentist will perform a digital scan of your teeth and create a custom series of aligners that you will wear in succession, each for one to two weeks, to achieve the smile you want.
How much time should I spend wearing Invisalign aligners?
The aligners are designed to be worn all the time as recommended by a general dentist, except when you’re eating or drinking. At minimum, you should expect to wear your aligners for 22 hours a day. Wearing them for less time or on an inconsistent basis can delay your progress.
How long will my Invisalign treatment take from start to finish?
This varies from patient to patient, but in general, a full course of treatment takes somewhere between one year to 18 months. Alignment issues that require more advanced treatment could take a little longer, whereas smaller corrections can be achieved in about six months.
What does Invisalign cost?
Cost varies depending on the individual treatment plan. Invisalign typically does cost more than traditional braces, however it’s important to keep in mind the value that Invisalign offers in terms of their comfort, discreet appearance, and flexibility to take them off when eating and drinking.
Is Invisalign covered by insurance?
It’s important to check with your insurance provider before making a decision about Invisalign treatment. Different insurance plans will have different options. Some dental plans do not offer any coverage for orthodontics and others cover only part of the costs.
How frequently should I see my dentist during my treatment?
We recommend appointments with your dentist every six weeks while you’re using Invisalign. This will help your dentist track your progress and make sure your teeth are shifting into the proper position. During these appointments, you will also be given your next set of aligners and any additional guidance on how and when to wear them.
